Holiday Home in Snowdonia

Many tourists come to Wales to visit the well known landmark, Snowdon. The peak of Snowdon is the highest point in the British Isles, not including Scotland. Herefordshire - An Idyllic Place for Garden Lovers

The gardens themselves cover around three acres and they're further set in twenty-five acres of river meadows, which offer stunning views to Wales. Divided into a series of 'rooms' which were begun in 1913, Bryan's Ground offers visitors follies called 'The Sulking House' (complete with its own gothic garden), 'The Lighthouse', and 'The Belvedere'. No one could fail to be delighted with the scented flowers, the topiary and the rose gardens.
Abbey Dore Court Garden is also well worth a visit. About 12 miles from Hereford city and sitting at the south end of the Golden Valley, it's open from early spring until autumn. Laid out over six acres, it also boasts a one-acre walled garden with no fewer than nine borders separated by brick pathways, arches and a water sculpture.
If you're visiting Abbey Dore Gardens, you'll want to walk the riverside arboretum - there are plenty of seats supplied - the owners encourage you to sit and enjoy the peaceful setting. The Court gardens are close to the famous mid-12th century Cistercian Abbey so lots to look around if you're in the area.
Westonbury Mill Water Gardens are close to the half-timbered village of Pembridge. It covers over three acres and contains ponds, a corn mill and a variety of interesting follies. The follies provide some light relief. One of them, a dome-roofed fernery, is fashioned from sunlit wine bottles and another, a castellated tower, has gargoyles that spurt jets of water.
As you might expect from its name, the Water Gardens specialise in water-loving plants and there are paths over the bog garden area to allow visitors to view the plants properly. The unusual African summerhouse incorporates bull rushes from the pond and is a good spot in which to view the wild flower meadow. The café serves home-cooked food and teas or you can sit beside the stream and take in the lovely view across the meadow to the hills.

Having Difficulty Promoting and Marketing Your Vacation Rental? Here Are Some Pointers

Finally you have your vacation rental ready to launch. The major hurdle of getting it ready has been jumped. You may have a couple of bookings but you suddenly realise that it just won't sell itself. Here is our experience. I hope it helps even just a little bit.
When launching our vacation rental on to the market we were lucky enough to be mentioned in a related article by a national newspaper followed by a double page spread in a national Sunday paper. This was achieved by networking our friends and family for any contacts they had and then by bugging them until they followed up on it. At this point, on advice from an excellent PR person, we had to come up with an idea for the article that wasn't just self promotion. It must have a bullet i.e. subject matter of interest to that journalist's audience. Your press releases must be along these lines. Base them around 'overcoming adversity' or 'new and interesting events in your area' or 'financing the build in this financial environment'.
Open a Facebook Page, get on twitter, start a blog, join a vacation rental website and of course Trip Advisor. Good reviews are gold dust. And I for one always check out places I intend to visit. Create a beautiful website with as many photos as you can load on there. A good photo speaks a thousand words. But more importantly make it easy to navigate. I recently came across a website where you could only view their home page, yet by trawling a search engine it was evident they had other pages on there. Follow up on every lead you get.
Send out promotional offers to your existing mailing list. Don't swamp them, a notice every three months is sufficient. You can do this in the guise of a Christmas Card or similar. We have now launched a number of added value vacations to ours, activity breaks including cookery classes, triathlon training weekends and sailing weekends. A great excuse to send another email to the guests we have already had. Make sure you mention any offers you may have going.
Most countries have some sort of free press release website. You can submit a press release with them or trawl the net and submit them with one in every country. Also most areas have promotional bodies and support services for new businesses in that area. Register with them and ask for help. Be bold. Shout from the tree tops. Because there are lots of us out there, but only the squeeky wheel gets oiled.

Holiday Rentals and Other Tourist Attractions in Le Tignet

South east of Grasse and north of Mandelieu La Napoule lies the Provencal village of le Tignet. Whilst only 25 minutes drive from Cannes, this village could not be different. It is quiet with flowing hills, cypress trees, olive trees and nestling in the sunny hills below the Southern Alps. It has Roman history and origins going back to pre-Roman times as well. It was a staging post for the Romans who built a camp here, but the lack of water made it non permanent.
In the 12th century the village was fortified and ny the 14th century, the monks who inhabited the Isle De Lerins had helped to make Le Tignet a huge farm. You can still see today the terracing that undertaken by the monks and during this period the village thrived trading with Grasse and Draguignon. The Plague finished all that in around 1348. It was devastating for the area wiping out a good number of villages completely and le Tignet suffered greatly.
It remained uninhabited from 1350 to 1699 when it was gradually re inhabited, but even by 1918 there were only about 120 people registered as living in the commune. All that has changed now with over 3000 attracted to the warm sunshine, the typical Provencal lifestyle and its proximity to Grasse and Cannes.
Cannes is an easy drive away and an even easier trip if you drive to Grasse and take the train. Nowadays the passenger line takes precedence over what was an industrial line, built originally at the turn of the century to allow the perfume manufactures of Grasse to more easily move their products out of Grasse. Sadly it fell into disrepair during the Second World War, and was only reopened in 2005 as a passenger service. That allows people in the are access not only to Cannes, a mere 25 minutes away, but the train links in to the main coastal network to give access to many of the wonderful Cote d'Azur beaches such as Golfe Juan or Juan Les Pins, plus Cannes, Nice, Antibes, and even across the border to Italy to collect those smelly cheeses and that special olive oil.
Grasse still has some of the perfume manufacturers in residence and tours to see how it is all done still run throughout the year. Cannes however has a great deal to offer. The shopping along La Croissette is world class with all the major designer labels with outlets. More shopping is available for mere mortals, and the beach restaurants are renowned throughout the world. The Old Town of Cannes is especially attractive after dark, when hoards of visitors and locals swarm up Rue St Antoine to the old town to find a restaurant or just to take in the atmosphere.
Staying in Le Tignet at a hotel may not be possible or advisable. To enjoy best the local amenities you may be better off looking to rent a private villa with a swimming pool. These are much more available than you might think, particularly in the summer time of July and August, as many of the locals take the opportunity to rent our their houses and to go on holiday themselves although why they would want to leave what may be one of the ultimate holiday destinations escapes me! Several agencies in the area specialise in renting out properties and many of these are English speaking or maybe even an ex pat. This makes it easier than trusting your dodgy French and with the prospect of great views and space to move around plus that swimming pool, it can be much more comfortable than a hotel.
To get to Le Tignet, a car is recommended. Nice airport is just 30 minutes drive and serves destinations throughout Europe and the UK and beyond.

Holiday Cottages in and Around Norfolk

Live on Olive Coast

A haven for package holiday-loving Brits, Majorca is often dismissed as nothing more than a hot spot for knotted hankies and News Of The World. Not so, enthusiast Lucia Graves, daughter of the poet Robert Graves, who spent her childhood in the beautiful village of Deia on the northeast of the island. This month sees the paperback release of her first book A Woman Unknown, Voices From A Spanish Life; the story of her life, interwoven against the rich and inspired landscape of Deia. In our guest feature, Lucia convinces us that, contrary to popular belief, Majorca isn't just straight out of a brochure.
Between the mountains and the sea
Somewhere in the middle of a high mountain range on the north-west coast of Majorca is a village of pale brown stone houses, clustered round a small hill. On the top of the hill, overlooking the Mediterranean, stand the Church of St John the Baptist and the graveyard; at its foot, level with the main road, is the Town Hall. Olive groves surround the village and the occasional tall palm tree lends it an exotic air.
Even after all these years, the first sight of Deia as you approach it from Palma still impresses me. After driving through a landscape of olive groves and oak woods, with only a few glimpses of the blue sea in the distance, you come round a wide corner and are suddenly confronted with a full view of the Mediterranean, its jagged coast of white and grey rocks stretching northwards. A moment later, you are driving down into the wide valley of Deia, crowned by the rocky heights of the Teix, a 3000ft-high ridge, whose brooding presence over the valley prevents the sun from reaching the houses until late morning. The valley is patterned throughout by endless lines of olive terraces - built by the Arabs who ruled the island between the 10th and the 13th centuries - and as you get closer, orange and lemon groves become visible. Here and there, near the village or in its outskirts, large old farmhouses, more like country mansions, stand out like oases against the pale olive groves. One of these is now the well-known luxury hotel, La Residencia.
Off the tourist track
Deia was, of course, a perfect place to grow up in, especially in the quiet days before tourism, when the fisherman's cove was deserted and there were no cars on the road. Peasants ploughed their land with mules and the fishwife walked up from the cove with her basket of brightly coloured fish, blowing a conch to announce her arrival in the village square. Olives were picked and turned into thick, golden oil, and large flocks of sheep roamed around the mountainside. Village life was ruled entirely by agricultural cycles, as it had been for centuries, and nothing seemed to stir its peace.
The sudden arrival of tourism in the early Sixties changed all that. Since then, there has been a steady increase in visitors, and numerous foreigners (mainly artists, writers and media professionals) have taken up residence in the village, or have made it their second home; the villagers have abandoned the ploughs and the olive picking to make a better living through the tourist trade. But its rocky coast and mountainous terrain have saved it from becoming a popular resort, like the over-developed ones that abound on other coastal areas of Majorca, and strict building regulations have managed to keep its ancient look almost intact.
Wanderings
The Cala, a small pebbly cove, can now be reached by car and you can enjoy fresh fish, salads or a delicious potato omelette in either of its two restaurants. But in the summer the beach tends to get very crowded during the day, and I prefer to go down early, at sunrise, when the only other visitors are two cormorants who breakfast on the small fish by the shore. On a calm summer's day it is an unforgettable experience to explore the coast on either side of the small harbour, by boat or dinghy, and observe the curious shapes of the rocks, the changing colours of the sea, the pink or purple of the reefs.
There are some fascinating walks too - you can pick up useful guidebooks in the main village shop, but don't attempt to climb the Teix without an experienced local guide. One of my favourite excursions is the short walk through the pine woods above the Cala, at the end of which stands a 17th century look-out tower, a round, sturdy, military construction, from which the watchmen would scan the sea and the coast for the sight of approaching Berber pirates. Another is the long but relatively easy walk following the old mule-track to Soller, high above the main road, with the reward of fantastic views and perhaps some tasty tapas when you finally arrive at Soller square.
Fiesta culture
But Deia has its own thriving caf and restaurant life, and there is always an exhibition at one of the galleries, to channel the works of its resident artists. A music festival runs throughout the summer with concerts in a palatial country house overlooking the coast, from which you can watch the sun setting in the sea as you listen to the music.
Of the local fiestas that mark the religious calendar, my favourite is the Three Kings, on 5 January, when from the churchyard you suddenly catch sight of three rows of pink flares making their way down the dark mountainside and a while later the three Magi and their attendants, all in colourful garb, lead the procession up to the Church, carrying presents for the village children. Or the bonfires lit on the Eve of Saint Anthony, 16 January, when bread and local sausages are toasted and eaten with a glass of good Majorcan red wine.
Sometimes, when I am walking back home in the moonlight and can see the olive groves in the distance bathed in pale light, or when I sit out on the terrace, watching the mountains turn pink in the sunset, I feel I am back in the quiet days of my childhood. Nothing, on the surface, appears to have changed.
