Life As A Snowbird

Snow, cold weather, windy days, these are things that as I got older, I enjoyed less and less. As a kid, I could not wait until the first snowfall of the season. Now, being in my mid-60s, I am more worried about slipping on the ice and breaking my hip. For this very reason, I chose to live the life of snowbird a few years ago and I could not be happier.
For those of you unfamiliar with the term, a snowbird is someone who does everything in their power to avoid cold weather. As the winter days edge closer, we begin to look for warmer climates that will not be as harsh on our old bones. Places such as California, Miami, Texas, and the Carolinas are usually at the top of the snowbird list.
Having spent many summers on the beaches of Sea Isle City, NJ, I wanted something that offered a similar setting, but that was also close enough to home that my family would be able to visit without spending a lot of money traveling. Miami had always been a favorite vacation spot, and the recent housing market decline presented some incredible bargains.
The one challenge that we faced was in being able to supply both homes with full furnishings. Being one of those people that does not like strangers in my home, renting during the off months was not an option. Therefore, it seemed foolish to completely furnish another home. The solution was in utilizing moving pods and home storage units.
As the winter months hit the calendar, we start to pack up our shore home and get ready to head to Miami. Because we have so many grandchildren in our family, the cost of packing up the home each year is insignificant. In addition, as the years go by, we tend to add a few more touches to each home that stay in place year round. It is only the big pieces of furniture that we move back and forth.
Any items that we do not want to risk having stolen go right into the local storage unit. For the items we are going to transport back and forth, we use a moving pod and allow the kids to come over at their leisure and help us pack it up. When we are ready to go, we simply call the company and have the pod dropped right in our driveway. Usually, a few family members will take a vacation to help us unpack and are rewarded with a free week in Miami!
